The sun may set in Singapore just as people in Europe log on again, or the US team is preparing for evening while others are starting their day.<\/p><p id=\"ember1572\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The central leadership challenge becomes this: How do you build cohesion and trust when your team is spread across time zones \u2014 and sometimes never, or rarely, meets in person?<\/p><p id=\"ember1573\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Drawing on The Lioness Effect \u2014 where presence, purpose, and integrity matter more than proximity \u2014 I have been exploring real-world examples from pharma and life sciences companies. There are some good examples of efforts in how this trust can be built, even across borders and hours.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-70c738c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"70c738c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What the Lioness Teaches Us: Presence Without Proximity<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49e31c0 elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"49e31c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"ember1575\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A lioness needn\u2019t be physically near every member of her pride to inspire loyalty. Her influence is felt through her consistent leadership, protection, and shared purpose.<\/p><p id=\"ember1576\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Similarly, leaders of global teams must anchor their presence in values that resonate everywhere: fairness, clarity, empathy, and respect \u2014 so that no one ever feels \u201cout of sight, out of mind\u201d.<\/p><p id=\"ember1577\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In global health, pharma, and life sciences, leading across geographies means more than juggling time zones\u2014it means building <em>trust zones<\/em> that span continents. We may not all be in the same room (or awake at the same hour), but connection, cohesion, and shared purpose still must pulse through our teams.<\/p><p id=\"ember1578\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The question I often ask: <strong>How can leaders build trust when their teams are spread across the map\u2014and stretched across sleep schedules?<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-907d095 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"907d095\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"> Pharma Companies Getting This Right<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab6abae elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab6abae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"ember1580\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It helps to look at real-world organisations that are modelling cohesion across geographies. Here are a few:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Takeda<\/strong>: This Japanese biopharmaceutical company has been hiring remote roles globally (e.g. Clinical Trial Associates, Medical Science Liaison roles) which allow flexibility across time zones. Their remote-friendly job postings suggest an understanding of distributed teams and an established infrastructure for supporting them.<\/li><li><strong>Moderna<\/strong>: Known for leading in vaccine development during the pandemic, Moderna also supports remote and hybrid roles. By doing so, they\u2019ve built cross-regional scientific collaborations that don\u2019t depend on co-location.<\/li><li><strong>Pfizer<\/strong>: As one of the pharma giants, Pfizer has shown adaptability in its remote job offerings and has invested in digital platforms to support distributed project teams.<\/li><li><strong>Novo Nordisk, Roche, GSK, AstraZeneca<\/strong>: These companies appear in rankings of \u2018best pharma companies to work for\u2019 in part because of clear mission alignment, strong global cultures, and high employee satisfaction across markets. Those factors support cohesion across geographies.<\/li><\/ul><p id=\"ember1582\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">These are just a few examples \u2013 there are many more &#8211; What can we learn from them? They don\u2019t simply tolerate time-zone differences\u2014they build structures and cultures around them.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-713a8e9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"713a8e9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"> Time Zones Are Logistics. Trust Zones Are Culture.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c44c7a3 elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c44c7a3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"ember1584\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Yes, time zone logistics matter: meeting scheduling, overlaps, \u201cwho stays late so others can join,\u201d etc. But deeper work is required\u2014because without trust, scheduling alone doesn\u2019t build cohesion.<\/p><p id=\"ember1585\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Here are what the <em>trust zones<\/em> look like in practice:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Informed Meeting Rotations<\/strong>: Rotating meeting times means the same people aren\u2019t always inconvenienced. This can be achieved by ensuring overlap windows for key collaborations and setting up asynchronous updates.<\/li><li><strong>Visibility of Contributions<\/strong>: Some team members may be \u201coffline\u201d more often due to local hours. Leaders or meeting chairs can ensure their work is visible\u2014through shared documents, highlights in team updates, or recognition in group settings.<\/li><li><strong>Cultural Rituals That Bind<\/strong>: Even virtually\u2014 \u2018time aware\u2019 check-ins, team shout-outs, cross-regional knowledge sharing\u2014rituals that let people know you are aware of where THEY are and feel part of something bigger than time-zone constraints.<\/li><li><strong>Intentional Empathy &amp; Wellbeing Checks<\/strong>: Leaders acknowledging what it means to log in from 2am or late hours, or to juggle local issues (power cuts, internet instability, cultural holidays) demonstrates insight and awareness beyond you own \u2018local\u2019 situation.<\/li><li><strong>Consistent Values, Adapted Styles<\/strong>: How you communicate, when you expect responses may vary according to the focus, time or work requirements, but the values\u2014transparency, respect, trust\u2014must remain consistent.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-be95ea1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"be95ea1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why This Matters More Than Ever<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d847ed4 elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d847ed4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"ember1588\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In pharma and life sciences, delays, misunderstandings, or misalignment can have real impact: On delivery timelines, regulatory submissions, client access. If cohesion falters, outcomes suffer.<\/p><p id=\"ember1589\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Teams that trust one another\u2014even when they are never physically together\u2014tend to be more resilient, innovative, and creative.
