And for women, especially those aspiring to step into or rise within leadership roles, it is one of the most transformative tools we can cultivate.<\/p><p id=\"ember54\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In the many years I\u2019ve spent working with leaders across healthcare, academia, and global systems, I\u2019ve seen the pattern time and again: talent is abundant, ideas are powerful &#8211; but confidence is often the missing link. Not because women are incapable or unqualified, but because we have been conditioned to question our authority, doubt our readiness, and wait for permission.<\/p><p id=\"ember55\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This article is a call to stop waiting. To recognise that confidence isn\u2019t something you either have or don\u2019t &#8211; it is something you build. And it is the foundation from which leadership takes root, grows, and thrives.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-512e4be elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"512e4be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Confidence Gap Is Not All About Competence<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-48714ea elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"48714ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"ember57\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Let\u2019s begin by dispelling a myth: a lack of confidence does not reflect a lack of ability.<\/p><p id=\"ember58\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Many of the most competent, thoughtful, visionary women I\u2019ve worked with are also those who battle with self-doubt. They hesitate to speak in meetings, second-guess their decisions, or decline opportunities because they fear they are not &#8220;ready enough&#8221; &#8211; even when their track record proves otherwise.<\/p><p id=\"ember59\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This is the quiet presence of <strong>imposter syndrome<\/strong>, a phenomenon disproportionately affecting women in leadership &#8211; especially those who hold multiple marginalised identities.<\/p><p id=\"ember60\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Imposter syndrome whispers: <em>\u201cYou\u2019re not good enough.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve just been lucky.\u201d \u201cSoon they\u2019ll realise you don\u2019t belong here.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p id=\"ember61\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It thrives in environments where representation is lacking, where achievement is expected but rarely affirmed, and where leadership models are based on dominance rather than depth.<\/p><p id=\"ember62\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">But here&#8217;s the truth: you don\u2019t need to become someone else to lead. You don\u2019t need to silence your sensitivity or overcompensate with certainty. You need to develop <strong>self-trust<\/strong> and that begins with confidence.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7adb56c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7adb56c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why Confidence Matters for Leadership Advancement<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-00f7206 elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"00f7206\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"ember64\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Confidence influences how we communicate, make decisions, handle setbacks, and advocate &#8211; for ourselves and others.<\/p><p id=\"ember65\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In leadership, it becomes the anchor that allows us to:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Make difficult decisions<\/strong> when the answers aren\u2019t clear.<\/li><li><strong>Speak up<\/strong> even when our perspective challenges the norm.<\/li><li><strong>Hold space<\/strong> for difference, discomfort, and debate.<\/li><li><strong>Ask for what we need<\/strong> &#8211; resources, support, recognition.<\/li><li><strong>Pursue opportunities<\/strong> rather than waiting to be invited.<\/li><\/ul><p id=\"ember67\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Without confidence, our ideas stay silent. Our influence remains hidden. And our leadership impact is muted &#8211; not by ability, but by doubt.<\/p><p id=\"ember68\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This is why I\u2019ll be speaking at a webinar on <strong>25 June<\/strong> as part of a wider conversation on <em>Nursing Efficiencies and Leadership<\/em>. It helps us lead from clarity, not fear.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2fdb3ca elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2fdb3ca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Building Confidence: Practical Techniques<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-312f6e3 elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"312f6e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"ember71\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">So how do we build confidence? Not as a fa\u00e7ade, but as a deeply rooted inner resource?<\/p><p id=\"ember72\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Here are some approaches I recommend to the women I coach and mentor:<\/p><p id=\"ember73\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>1. Reframe Fear as Growth <\/strong>Confidence is not the absence of fear, it\u2019s the ability to act despite it. When we stretch ourselves, fear is a natural companion. Instead of seeing fear as a stop sign, see it as a signal: <em>You are growing<\/em>. Welcome it as evidence that you\u2019re moving forward, not failing<\/p><p id=\"ember74\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>2. Keep a Leadership Journal <\/strong>Document your successes, no matter how small. Record the conversations you led, the risks you took, and the praise you received. Over time, this becomes a library of proof &#8211; a counter-narrative to imposter syndrome. On difficult days, it reminds you of who you are.<\/p><p id=\"ember75\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>3. Learn to Say No With Confidence <\/strong>Many women equate leadership with saying yes to everything. But boundaries are part of confidence. Saying no to what drains you allows you to say yes to what grows you. You don\u2019t have to do it all &#8211; you have to do what matters.<\/p><p id=\"ember76\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>4. Find Mirrors, Not Just Mentors <\/strong>Mentors offer guidance. But mirrors reflect your strength. Surround yourself with people who remind you of your power when you forget it. Build a support system that affirms your voice and challenges you to use it.<\/p><p id=\"ember77\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>5. Practice Decision-Making <\/strong>Confidence grows through action. If difficult decisions feel overwhelming, start by practicing with smaller ones. Clarify your values, weigh your options, trust your judgement, and reflect on the outcome. Each decision builds the muscle of self-trust.<\/p><p id=\"ember78\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>6. Speak Before You&#8217;re Ready <\/strong>You don\u2019t need to wait for the perfect moment or the perfect words. Speak up in meetings. Share your perspective. Ask the question. Confidence is often built through doing, not waiting.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0421da3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0421da3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Leadership Looks Like You<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72b0548 elementor-invisible elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"72b0548\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_animation&quot;:&quot;fadeIn&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p id=\"ember80\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Representation matters. When women see other women leading with confidence, not bravado, but grounded presence, it redefines what leadership can be.<\/p><p id=\"ember81\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">You don\u2019t have to perform a version of leadership that was never made for you. You can lead with empathy. With clarity. With curiosity. With strength that doesn\u2019t shout but stands.<\/p><p id=\"ember82\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Confidence is not about becoming someone else. It\u2019s about coming home to yourself.<\/p><p id=\"ember83\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">For nurses, for leaders in health and care, for women at every level of influence &#8211; this is our moment. Systems are shifting. Voices are being heard.
